Hugging this character: He’s huggable! But he will be flustered in his own way.
Kissing this character: Yes? Yes.
Flirting with this character: Yes. So long as everyone is okay with Rin awkwardly flirting back with really corny lines and accidental destruction of public property, then we’re all good!
Fighting with this character: YES, BRING IT ON!
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): YES!! BRING IT ON AGAIN – Rin is durable and he can take a lot of hits. Even so, he wouldn’t like to have missing body parts. … Nor would he want to cause irreversible bodily harm to another.
Killing this character: Uhm… Maybe. This will be okay so long we discuss it first.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Go for it! There’s nothing profound going on in there.

Warnings: His bite is worse than his bark. While he might not be the most academic young man, he is physically capable of holding his own and then some.

Personality:
A kid like Rin Okumura could be easily dismissed as a hotheaded youth with too much spare time on his hands. He’s as brash as he is passionate, an empathetic young man who has a slight case of tunnel vision. In some ways, he is as typical as any fifteen year old: he is noticing the other sex, his confidence is low, and he has moments when he feels as if he can do anything. He is invincible! Nothing could possibly hurt him! The world belonged to him!

Rin loves reading dramatic manga with super dramatic plot twists and engaging characters that make him cry, watching movies (like Star Wars), and listening to music (sometimes). He can (and prefers) to sleep for 10 hours a day and he has slept through class more than once. If asked to describe his study habits, he’d say something along the lines of “hands-on practical learning!” which easily means he can’t stand to be locked in a stuffy room all day long. Rin also enjoys pulling pranks on his friends, has something of a rivalry with his twin brother, and can be sarcastic when the need arises. Rin enjoys cooking, being outside, and he has a tendency to disobey direct orders. But like other kids his age, there are factors that help influence his actions, and events in his life that have shaped him into the individual he is becoming. Despite the fact that he is the son of Satan, Rin works hard to prove that he much more than just another half-demon. The results are usually mixed between the reactions of others and his own self confidence. He has learned to accept himself and how others view him, and focuses instead on becoming the best person he can be.

Rin has always been the odd one out. As a child, he felt ostracized from his peers because of his volatile temper. He would become vicious when angered, and his strength (impressive even at a young age), would lead others to label him as a demon and a monster.

It was difficult for him to understand the connection between his strength and their fear, but he knew that it was his actions and his power that alienated them. To him, their words were unfounded. He believed it had more to do with how he had been able to cause that much pain to his classmates and show no remorse (or sentience) while doing so. His temper as a child was as wild and unrestrained as the strength he displayed. These factors led to a small confrontation between Shiro Fujimoto and Rin, father and son, which damaged a few of his Fujimoto’s ribs and left Rin with a resolution he could attempt to stick to. After the incident, Rin resolved to use his strength for something good, in emulation of his father. Try as he might to abate his initial hotheaded reactions, it was his willingness to help others (whether they wanted his help or not) which proved to be his undoing. He was too strong to be seen as human by the townspeople and he often fell into trouble by causing more destruction than needed. While Rin would feel as if there was little he could do to change the image already constructed for him, he never stopped trying to find a way to be helpful to those around him. While in middle school, he helped less and less. He skipped class and barely kept his grades up. Yet his temper remained unchanged and his attitude became more rebellious. Rin no longer cared what others thought of him as the years went by. He felt as if he should just accept that being “a cool and respectable person” just wasn’t in the cards for him. No matter how much Father Fujimoto believed in him, Rin had a hard time believing in himself.

After graduating from middle school, Rin started looking for a steady job rather than pursuing higher education. He felt that schools would be better off without his personality and he doubted that he would learn anything, or be of use to anyone while inside of a classroom. A part time job seemed to Rin like a better place to start, but he soon found out that he was unable to hold down a job. It always came back to something he had done, in one way or another.

However, after the death of his father, joining an Exorcist cram school, and coming in contact with classmates he would later consider friends, his temper was put to the test. Rin found himself smiling a little more than before as he slowly began to realize how much it meant to him to finally have close connections with others. As much as it filled him with good cheer, it also greatly frightened him. Rin could not accept that he was a demon, and he wasn’t sure how his companions would react to his parentage.

Rin tried to pull back his anger (and felt it dissipate) as he grew closer to his classmates and through his studies. Yet, he would always remember who and what he was. He feared their reaction if they ever found out that he was the son of Satan. As he grew closer to his friends from the Exorcist Cram School, the calmer he began to feel. His outbursts changed from angry declarations to childish proclamations. His conflict between hiding his parentage and protecting his friends from himself came to a peak during a fight with the Earth King, Amaimon. His relation to Satan was revealed to his classmates, and soon followed their open distrust towards him.

When he reveled himself through his fight with Amaimon, his fears were realized. His friends rejected him and, in turn, Rin decided that he would rather earn their friendship and trust again than to live life without that companionship. He knew that they were afraid of him. He had dealt with other people’s apprehension before, but he had not been close to them. While his classmates were taken away for a proper explanation of Rin's condition, Rin had been taken to a religious counsel to have his fate decided. Unwilling to bend to the will of those aging exorcists, Rin fought back with his ambitions and promised to himself to train harder so that those around him were left unharmed by his flames.

But his new resolve could not convince his companions. To them he was a dangerous creature and Rin felt their animosity more acutely than he had before.

It took a memorable trip to Kyoto to help Rin see that he was a person worthy of recognition by those who wanted his attention and that he need only to accept who he was in order to take hold of his life and find meaning within himself. As the group headed to Kyoto for their mission, Rin worked on his flame control. He was able to speak to Izumo and Shima, but the fear and anger amongst the others still lingered. Rin could hardly blame them for it, but as the mission continued, it began to grate on his nerves. He had already dealt with that behavior for most of his life. He wasn’t willing to see it repeat itself with the friends he had gained.

During the Kyoto arc, Rin did what he could to redeem himself in the eyes of his companions. While the cram school gang and the other exorcists worked on the case at hand, Rin was busy with other tasks that were (initially) much more prevalent to him. He trained every day under Shura’s surveillance, performed many menial tasks, and made sure that he was as helpful as he could be. Rin was diligent in both his training and daily interactions with the others, so much so that he was able to speak to Shima as well as Suguro’s father. For a moment he even managed to gain a semblance of control, but his joy was short lived. The trouble in the Kyoto base had reached its boiling point. Rin witnessed Suguro’s argument with his father, immediately spotting the similarities between his own final words to Father Fujimoto. Rin didn’t want anyone else to suffer the same pain he had experienced that day. Rin’s words towards Father Fujimoto haunted him, even when he tried hard to move forward.

Impulsive as always, Rin rushed forward and demanded that Suguro apologized to his father. Rin reacted with anger towards Suguro’s apparent lack of concern. He didn’t know how he could possibly say the words to make Suguro understand, so he responded in the only manner he knew how. Rin revealed his flames and charged right at Suguro, breaking right through the barrier Suguro put up. As before, his behavior only got him into trouble, yet each time it happens to him, the consequences become worse and worse.

Rin believed that after his confrontation with Amaimon, he had grown and become a better person. Yet his outburst at Suguro, his inability to control himself even when he had seemed to master it, weighed heavy on his mind. His actions towards Suguro sealed his fate, and sentenced him to death. He lost complete confidence in himself after the declaration of the sentence. Though he tried to fight against it, to prove that he could still draw his sword and help others, it was a futile effort.

It was while he was in his holding cell, waiting for the death sentence did he come to terms with what he had tried so hard to push away: that he was a demon, that he was feared for his flames, that he could not control himself even when he tried to do something good, that he was afraid of himself. He was crushed by the gravity of his situation. Within that holding cell, Rin began to believe that he did deserve to die. He asked himself “Why was I saved?” but he would have to find the answer to that question himself. Shiro’s death still haunted him. His very existence haunted him. Rin didn’t want to be a monster, he didn’t choose to be the son of Satan or to be feared or hated by all who saw what he was. As much as he wished against it, he couldn’t go against what was far too true. He was a monster. It was as he was waiting to die in that cell that he was confronted by Shiemi. Her words brought him back. She showed him that she was not afraid of him – and that she was sorry for not realizing his pain sooner. Rin accepted her apology and found some confidence in her fearlessness but he could not draw his sword. Slowly but surely it gave him the courage to continue fighting, despite his lack of self-confidence.

After a grueling battle with the Impure King, Rin regained his confidence by realizing that he had to accept who and what he was. He managed to fully control his flames and rescued those he cared about. While his fears still linger he is determined to move forward. He accepted who and what he was, the son of Satan, a monster to himself and others, but a monster who wanted to help out everyone he knew. He wants to become a much better person than he is by being true to himself, rather than parading about like something he isn’t. Rin is a half-demon. He has connections with Mephisto. He understands fear. These are the tools he uses now to better himself and help those around him, even when they are not connected to the Cram School. He’s comforted by those he surrounds himself with. Before popping into Route, Rin has finished the Seven Mysteries of True Cross mission and has given Godaiin the eyedrops he needs to stop seeing demons. But even with the eye drops, Godaiin does not take them and befriends Rin instead. Rin’s gained another friend, one close enough to the demon world to be hurt by it, but far enough that he doesn’t have to play a direct role.

Rin has many crippling insecurities. He’s afraid of losing the trust of his friends, especially during the events of the Kyoto arc. After he drew his sword and was confronted by the fact that he was truly a demon who could make his own decision how he was to be viewed, he gathered his courage and learned how to control his flames. As he encountered other missions, he delved deeper into what it meant to be a half-demon and the son of Satan, thoroughly accepting himself. He still could not believe that it had happened to him nor could he answer why he had been saved, but he knows that he wants to live his life the best way that he can.

Even though he’s living in such an impossible world, he still wants to have what any child his age would want. He wants a fun school life, after learning that even a person like him (one who has been seen as a delinquent) can learn to have a fun and normal school life. He delights at the thought of school field trips and looks forward to making a normal school friend. Rin’s happy that his cram school life doesn’t have to be his whole life. He wants friends, to participate in school festivals, to goof off and celebrate youth.

Generally, when he is in a good mood, Rin can be an easy going (if head strong) kid. He enjoys being around those he cares about and wants nothing more than to keep them safe from harm and from the harm he can (unwittingly) bring to them. When put in a bad mood, Rin still manages to focus on protecting, but he ends up doing more fighting than guarding. Around others, Rin is quiet. He listens attentively to conversations and carefully watches over his friends from a distance. At times he'll contribute and speak, usually with a question or a subtle remark. Other times, he'll offer his own brand of comic relief or a comment meant to join in a conversation. Lately he’s gotten more accustomed to joining them and takes a more active role in daily conversation. He can be sarcastic at times, at other times a joker, and a deliberate delinquent (due to his unwillingness to follow the rules since there is always another way of doing things). He's slowly become comfortable enough with a set of friends that he can easily communicate with, rather than to revert to his old habits of staying away from others. Yet when confronted by an enemy, he’ll gladly start yelling first and asking questions later. He is impolite, but not because he intends to hurt others.

Rin is supportive and very protective of those around him. He doesn't see himself as the center of attention, choosing instead to help in the background. He can take the main stage if he must, and he often does because he knows he wields far more power than his peers do. Yet, he is learning now to take a back seat instead. It is because of his strength that Rin has to remain in the background, as the group’s trump card. It is a role that Rin is more than happy to fulfill.

Before he unleashed his demonic powers, Rin felt he could not rise above the expectations others had for him. He didn't believe he could hold down a "respectable" job because of how quick he was to anger. His emotions had always been uncontrollable, and in a way he had no desire to take hold of them. Rin would have rather gone with the flow and allowed things to happen, yet at times, he would stand and hope that the best possible outcome was still within reach. He defended other people from the shadows, and was blamed in the process for starting fights with other students.

Remaining as a child would have been impossible but something he wished he could do. Being saddled with his mental burden, he focuses on other things to keep his mind off of the facts of his new life. He cooks, finds odd jobs to do around him, talks to his new friends or trains his body and his mind – anything to get him thinking of other things.

Despite his situation, Rin is an optimist, through and through. His optimism could be mistaken for childishness at times, though there is plenty of evident to peg him as a childish dork. In a rough draft of his dorm, his side of the room is littered with manga magazines and his walls are bare save for a few movie posters like the Star Wars saga. He’s into pop culture and can both name and recognize a few popular j-rock bands. He likes to have fun and avoids looking how just how dreary the world can be. He doesn’t want to live life like that. He has high hopes of becoming stronger and protecting those around him. There is just a single blemish upon his optimistic conscious: his fear. As he encounters various people and their reactions towards his relation to Satan (along with his own hatred towards his biological father) Rin seesaws between maintaining his individuality and becoming the very monster they fear. He knows that he won’t – and he is working hard to avoid that fate – but he has already lost his friends once before. And he is not willing to be lonely and afraid again.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Rin’s biggest fear is to be rejected by his friends. He has grown to rely on them more than he does on himself. Without them, he would not have had the courage to face the challenges that confronted him. He acknowledges the strength of their bonds but he still fears being abandoned by them. He is too stubborn when frustrated, and when angered, Rin tends to let his emotions get the best of him. He is learning how to hold that part back, but it results in a smile and an attempt at a joke. He is afraid being dragged down into Gehenna, having already witnessed it once in his life.

His strengths lie in his cooking abilities and optimism. He finds it easier to deal with a situation if he ignores the negatives. If he must confront his inner demons, then he will, but only in the heat of battle. But once that experience is over and done with, he pushes towards focusing on what is important. Rin would rather live in the moment than overanalyze the future. As far as he is concerned, the present is all that matters. The future will come.
While he isn’t a master chef, Rin knows enough about cooking to feed himself and his comrades. His brother has mentioned that his cooking is better than the pros (and encouraged him to open a small and short-lived restaurant in their school) but Rin doesn’t take it to heart. He knows he can cook and keeps it at that. When given the opportunity to show his skills in the kitchen, he will do so, but only so that others can eat. He may be bit of a show-off but he’s a little more reserved about his cooking – unless he is being openly complimented, then he’ll gladly boast about it being his talent. He wants to be useful, not only to others, but to prove to himself that he can be a reliable person.

First Person Sample:
Look, I don’t know anything about Team Rocket or whatever – but I do know they’ve stolen a lot from people lately …

[The speaker cringes for just a moment. Rin still hadn’t gotten the hang of speaking directly to the gear (liar, he had, he just wanted to rely on his own strengths--) but he needed their help. Hell, as much as he wanted to take care of this himself, he knew that acting on his own was only a liability.
And yet, no matter how often that fact was drilled into his head, he still refused to acknowledge it. Rin still stared resolutely into the pokegear, his jaw set firm although his gaze seemed to waver.]

…I’m taking them down for what they did. [Off screen a small whimper could be heard. Rin looks to his left, his frown gone and replaced instead with the soft and discomforting fear of someone about to lose something precious. When he returns his gaze to the gear, it blazes with the fire of a broken boy who hasn’t realized it’s already over.]

…Where are they?

Third Person Sample:
Ecruteak City was a lot like Kyoto, except a lot more burned and charred in some places. Rin had kept his nose in the pokefield guide through most of the previous night, but now that he was seeing the grand city with his own eyes, it was hard to put the two together. In the bright daylight sun, the city seemed even more surreal. The guide’s pictures had nothing on the real thing! Rin and Poochy marveled at the “ye ole tyme” architecture and the local cuisine. The guide mentioned beautiful Kimono girls, some legend, local history, and the town’s local celebrity, but it seemed to have left out food.

That wasn't even close to being a good idea. Rin was hungry! And pictures in a guide book weren't making him any less hungry! It definitely wasn't helping Poochy either! If they just didn't eat the last of their food two days ago, this wouldn't be happening...

Rin and Poochy’s rumbling stomachs were quickly and frequently reminding them that they needed food – and fast. Poochy ran up ahead of Rin, using her nose to sniff out as much as she could. …He was almost jealous of her. No, he was jealous of her. Rin wanted to follow his own nose! Wasn’t he hungry enough to suddenly regain super speed or enhanced food find features? Or, hell, even spontaneous food producing skills would have been great!

But not him. Rin had to run to keep up with Poochy, his movements already slowed by his hollow stomach. She stopped by a lonely looking food cart parked by the edge of town. There was only one person in charge. Rin’s stomach rumbled painfully as he glanced over the limited options. But Poochy already had a choice in mind. She pawed at the side of the cart, right beneath a plate of biscuits. Why did Poochy want biscuits? Didn’t she want that awesome looking bowl of instant noodles instead?

Wait, no, she didn’t like noodles anyway. …Whatever, he’d buy ingredients for dinner later. They needed breakfast now.

“So what’s this?” Rin asked as he held up a small plate of shrink-wrapped biscuits. The owner of the food cart briefly looked over the top of her magazine. “Lava Cookies. They’re a specialty.” She said as she turned a page. “You buy a dozen of those, and I throw in a Pokeball for free.”

It sounded too good to be true – but did it really matter? No! There were about to be fed! And a pokeball too? The owner may as well had sold him the winning lottery ticket! Rin quickly paid her, and immediately unwrapped the cookies, pulling out one for himself and one for Poochy.

After that first bite, they knew exactly why the deal seemed too good.

“These are stale!”

“No refunds.”

“But you never said they were st– “

“No refunds.”

“But you – “

“No – “

“Listen to me!”

“ – refunds.”

“Whatever!” Jeez, cart lady. He’ll just use the cookies as bait. And with that extra pokeball (which he doubled checked to make sure that wasn’t a trick either) he’d so catch a new Pokémon. And with that new Pokémon, he’d make way better “cookies” than magazine cart lady could ever dream to make!!

But first he needed some water to get that stale cookie taste out of his mouth...
