Character Information

Name: Rin Okumura
Canon: Blue Exorcist
Canon Point: end of series – episode 26
Age: 15
History: here’s a link to his canon...
Rin will also be carrying memories from Inugami! It was a horrible experience and Rin never wants to step foot into a school ever again.

It is important to note that Rin’s personality underwent a change during his time within the school. Because he had arrived at such an early canon point, there was a lot of room to for him to grow and change. In general, he stayed very true to his tenacious and reckless core. He put others before himself and was more than elated to make friends. Rin appeared to be happy and carefree most of the time because he did all that he could to distract himself from the horrors within the school. Focusing on anything else was enough of an escape for him since it gave him a purpose. However, while Rin managed to make a few friends, they left one by one. It was already difficult for Rin to make connections to begin with but as the horrors mounted, he found it difficult to reach out again. The school continued to beat down on him despite his efforts to fight back.

There were a few key events within Inugami that helped to change Rin’s personality:

1. His death in July due to a botched exorcism disguised as a hide and seek game lead to the first major turn in the game. When Rin returned from death he was never quite the same. The very mention of a “hide and seek” game would be enough to startle him – though he’d hide it right away with a huge laugh and immediately change the subject. Since he never saw his assailant, Rin tends to avoid dark areas, such as rooms and hallways, as much as possible. He hid his fear behind his usual bravado, but that nervous tension did not leave his shoulders. During his stay in Inugami, there were nights when he thought he could still hear the footsteps of the creature that eventually stabbed him in the back.

2. After his revival, Rin became a little more awkward and insecure. He was able to bond with those who played in the hide and seek game. Close friends came and left as the months went on, and Rin was able to find a degree of comfort in the ones that stayed. The relationship between himself and his brother became strained after the hide and seek game, though he did everything he could to mend it. Rin didn’t know how to express how he felt about his death and revival. He wasn’t sure what to think about what death meant anymore. Like anything that confused him, Rin joked that perhaps he had come back as a zombie. It was his way of coping.

3. Rin started to show his true supernatural strength and saw a glimpse into his demonic flames when his brother was taken away from him. This would signal the first of Rin’s “dreams” (canon updates). The most dramatic one occurred in December when he was suddenly burdened with not only his flames but the knowledge of what he was. Thanks to his friends, he was able to come to terms with it fairly quickly – but it was only due to that. He saw his “awakening” as a side effect of being locked in Inugami for so long. He was sure the school was turning him into a monster, unaware that he had been one all along. He already had an inkling of that ideology in July when he returned from the dead. The increased strength and flames only fueled his mindset.

4. By February, most the friends he had made until that point were all gone. His powers only grew more frightening to him though he did his best to put a positive spin on them. Rin never told his brother about the “dreams” he had about being a demon but he did tell the two friends who were left to him. Only one stayed behind. Rin clung to that friendship as well as he could before it was taken away in April.

5. Throughout Rin’s enrollment in Inugami, he had seen and encountered many apparitions and horrors that had beaten down the senses of others. He would have never guessed that he would be subjected to the terror again, having already gone through it in the beginning of the school year. In April, Rin’s own fears came to a startling and terrible reality. He was turned into a zombie and he mindlessly attacked the other students. The one death that stuck out to him the most was that of his twin brother. He remembers far too clearly how he tore into Yukio as though he were a starved animal. He remembers that he did not stop, not even after Yukio was dead. He remembers a friend pushing him away – even though it was far too late for that.

6. When Rin came to his senses, his brother was gone, and with that went any pretense Rin had for keeping up a smile. In a futile attempt to cling to false hope, Rin spent his last few weeks in Inugami searching for his brother’s body. He could not find Yukio’s body after the zombie attack. His memories told him that there would never be a body to find because he had eaten every bit of his brother. His heart told him to keep searching, even if there really was nothing left. The need to find Yukio grew stronger as the school began to destroy itself around him. He refused to sleep, far too afraid now that he would dream again. His “dreams” have been terrible lately. His father is killed by a demon right before his eyes, Rin becomes a terrible (half) demon himself, his brother claims to hate him and draws a gun to his face… Rin keeps awake in every way he can but without food or water he eventually grows too weak to continue his search. His “dreams” of being a demon and having friends in a cram school clash with the mayhem and destruction of Inugami. It’s difficult to choose which one he would prefer. In the end, Rin’s too weak to fight or even stand. His body has changed to fit the one he sees in his “dreams”, though he can’t find the strength to be annoyed or amused about it. It would have been more useful to have the demonic powers (and yeah, maybe even the weird ears, teeth, and tail) much earlier when he was still physically able to fight. Rin spends more time in the dorm room he shared with twin since the school is determined to have the very infrastructure collapse on the remaining student body. He slips into one last “dream” – a final episode – before he breathes his last.

Personality: Rin is a headstrong, hotheaded young man who has a big heart. He strives to be the best person he can be, in emulation of his late father. While he may not be book smart (or very street smart), Rin makes up for it by offering a helping hand to everyone. He wants to be useful, not only to those close to him, but to everyone in his community. Rin always looks on the brighter side of a situation and tries to achieve a certain level of normalcy, despite every force in the world working against him. He struggles to gain recognition as a person separate from the harsh expectations others built around him during his childhood. Rin doesn’t care much for the secrets of others, nor does he enjoy keeping any of his own.

As a child, Rin had a terrible temper which got him into fights. He would often get in trouble in school for beating up his daycare playmates. Those same playmates soon became peers and fellow students in elementary and middle school. Though his teachers saw his reckless actions as irrational behavior born of a terrible temperament, they were blind to the fact their words were often the triggers for his actions. His playmates and daycare teachers had labeled him a demon, monster, and a “ferocious child”, both to his face and behind his back. Rin reacted in the only way he could – through violence. As a child, he knew of no other way to express himself or his displeasure at their words. He hated the direct and indirect jabs and wanted nothing more than to silence those whispers. It took the soothing and encouraging words of his adoptive father, Shiro Fujimoto, to calm him down. Shiro Fujimoto knew the risks of approaching a rampaging child, yet he confronted Rin regardless, at the expense of injuring himself. During that incident, Fujimoto passed to Rin a piece of advice he would carry for the rest of his life: “Use that power of yours for someone else, be gentle to them. Struggle! Otherwise you’re going to end up all alone. ” Since then, Rin has tried to keep his temper and impulsive manners under control, with mixed results. He does try to help others with his strength, yet he always fails to realize that part of their fear stems from that very same otherworldly power.

He wants to see his friends and his brother succeed, just as he also wants to succeed with his own goals. He feels inferior to his younger brother, so much so that he sets his twin up as a rival for himself. Yet, despite his feelings of inadequacy, Rin also greatly admires his twin brother for being “the good son”. He wants to be someone respectable, but Rin often feels that he won’t live up to Fujimoto’s expectations. Rin uses those negative feelings to propel himself forward. Rin continues to struggle through his own wavering self-confidence.

Part of his difficulty stems from his past experience with classmates who labeled him as a demon. There will always be an animosity between himself and a few of his friends because of his biological father, but together they are learning to look past his heritage and focus on Rin as a person. Rin always wants to help others, even if they fear his heritage or his abilities. Rin can lift objects far larger than himself. He can suddenly attack without warning, lashing out with a powerful punch that has often sent his peers to the hospital. Yet, very few have realized that the reason Rin got into fights in the first place was because he was trying to protect another person. He wouldn’t target bullies or run around campus with an inflated sense of justice. Instead Rin would often find himself a witness to something he felt was wrong. If he saw two of his classmates laughing at a girl behind her back, he would engage in a one sided fight on her behalf. He knew what it was like to have people talk about him and he knew that it made him feel awful – so why not turn the tables on others? Why not show people that their words have consequences? Rin tried to understand Fujimoto’s advice and he used it as best as he could. He struggled to use his strength to help other people. After all, those boys would never talk badly about that girl again. But he had not realized that there could be other ways to approach the situation.

Rin had usually been shut out of social groups in junior high and in other social settings because of the distance he kept between himself and his peers. His classmates had no problem maintaining that distance. After he graduated from middle school, Rin was determined to get a job (any job) and live life one day at a time. No matter where he went, it seemed as if he could not escape the person he was. Rin was still far too caring, far too empathetic to ignore when someone was in need. He was still too quick to react with anger than a simple conversation. Even at his various workplaces, his oddities and destructive behavior (which only reached a destructive end because Rin had been trying to be helpful) often sent him home without a job. Despite the distance he may at times seem to put between himself and others, Rin wanted only to be seen as someone who was deserving of respect. He stopped caring about becoming respectable after middle school and focused instead on living life as best as he could. He continued to struggle.

He desires acceptance but he won’t try to snatch it out of the hands of those who won’t give it to him. Rin doesn’t like lying. No matter what the situation is, he always aims to be honest. Rin is an emotional young man, and more than often he is swayed by these same emotions. He is usually in a good mood and if often seen smiling or laughing about something. Rarely does he look at the darker side of the matter, often leading others to believe he is not as serious or collected as his younger twin brother. Yet, when he is alone or speaking to his twin, he just barely delves into the issues which plague him: the death of their adoptive father, his personal conflict with his demon half, and fear from others. Rin works best on the field rather than behind the desk. Desk work confuses and irritates him to no end. He learns much better through action and re-enacting.

Rin’s biggest fear is to be rejected by the friends he has made. He has grown to rely on them more than he does on himself. Without them, he would not have had the courage to face the challenges that confronted him. He acknowledges the strength of their bonds but he still fears being abandoned by them. He is too stubborn when frustrated, and when angered, Rin tends to let his emotions get the best of him. He is learning how to hold that part back, but it results in a smile and an attempt at a joke. He is afraid being dragged down into Gehenna, having already witnessed it once in his life.

His strengths lie in his cooking abilities and optimism. He finds it easier to deal with a situation if he ignores the negatives. If he must confront his inner demons, then he will, but only in the heat of battle. But once that experience is over and done with, he pushes towards focusing on what is important. Rin would rather live in the moment than overanalyze the future. As far as he is concerned, the present is all that matters. The future will come.

While he isn’t a master chef, Rin knows enough about cooking to feed himself and his comrades. His brother has mentioned that his cooking is better than the pros (and encouraged him to open a small and short-lived restaurant in their school) but Rin doesn’t take it to heart. He knows he can cook and keeps it at that. When given the opportunity to show his skills in the kitchen, he will do so, but only so that others can eat. He may be bit of a show-off but he’s a little more reserved about his cooking – unless he is being openly complimented, then he’ll gladly boast about it being his talent. He wants to be useful, not only to others, but to prove to himself that he can be a reliable person.

Rin could be described as a person who cares too much about the people around him. He has a capacity for love that is both endearing and suffocating. When those he cares for are in danger, Rin resorts to the quickest way he can correct a situation. It usually involves a drastic display of physical strength.

Abilities: Cooking is the only skill Rin acknowledges as something he is good at. He enjoys cooking and loves to do it for others rather than for himself. Rin has been cooking from an early age, due to a life at an all-boys monastery where a good meal was hard to find. Due to his demonic parentage, Rin possesses super strength. He’s able to lift a car with no difficulty, carry loads far larger than himself, and knock out young adults his age with a single well placed punch. Before he drew the sword, he couldn’t do much more than display his terrifying strength. Rin could still feel pain, could still get hurt by other’s attacks. His injuries would not heal nearly as quickly.

His Blue Flames (a hereditary trait) are kept under control through the use of the demon blade, Kurikara. Rin maintains some control over these flames when the sword is sheathed since the flames spark in accordance to his emotions. He can use them without the use of the sword, since they are a part of him. The blue flames are both conscious and subconscious, bursting forth whenever he displays erratic emotions (anger and fear in particular). When the sword is drawn, by either another person or himself, the power of the flames spirals out of his control and Rin becomes a danger to anyone within his immediate area. The flames are attuned to his emotional and mental state. If Rin is not confident in himself or his power, then his power will consume him. The opposite is also true: if Rin can maintain his temper and believe in himself, the power will be under his control. The flames are his to use, and it is a lesson he does not learn until much later in his canon.

The flames engulf Rin, leaving him unaffected and protected while everything around him burns. The damage caused by Blue Flames is usually severe, unless the injured victim is given immediate medical attention. They burn everything they come in contact with, usually leaving nothing but a damaged body, a withered corpse, or ashes. Though the latter effects are true when applied to Satan, Rin's flames do not burn their target unless he wills it, he’s particularly angered, or it happened to be an inanimate object. He has no malicious intent within him, an intent that is felt through the very power he wields. Though he isn't aware of it himself, he has good control of his flames. It is when he is emotionally charged that he tends to lose control.

After he drew his sword, Rin could begin to understand demons who did not speak with human words. He cites this communication as “demon telepathy”. Rin often uses this innate ability to negotiate or to sense the presence of other demons within a preset vicinity. Along with his supernatural strength, Rin has terrifying regenerative powers. Most injuries are healed within minutes of the initial trauma, allowing him to continue fighting without worrying about his own health. Minor injuries, such as puncture wounds and other abrasions, heal with only a few minutes. Major injuries, which include being impaled or losing a limb, can take anywhere from a few minutes to a two hours. He has a high tolerance for pain, though it might be that he just doesn’t feel anything unless it’s a particularly serious injury. While he dislikes this ability because of its monstrous implications (only a “monster” would be able to heal as quickly as he does, Rin mentions at one point), he takes full advantage of it by luring enemies to himself to keep his friends from immediate danger. While it is not a labeled ability, Rin’s tail acts as his main point of weakness. He can be temporarily stopped and disabled if his tail has been pulled.

God/Shinki: Shinki

Why?: Rin wouldn’t consider himself a weapon, but he will do whatever he can to protect those he cares for. He doesn’t like to see people get hurt, especially those who are unable to defend themselves or have been pushed into a situation where they cannot. Rin might be too headstrong to be a reliable weapon initially, but once he has committed he is exceedingly loyal and formidable. … Ironically, Rin completely okay with being the cause of pain for people who are clearly deserving of it.

Cause Of Death: starvation and mental exhaustion at the hands of end-game Inugami madness

Vessel: butter knife

Name Location: nape of the neck

Power: Power Augmentation (Enhancement)

Third person sample: Rin had been waiting for Yukio to come to him first. It had been three months - three months more than was necessary to talk to his own brother - but during that time the boys had only gotten into more and more fights. They were petty arguments, sometimes blown into yelling matches, but today was the day that Rin was sure that the arguing would come to an end. They couldn't keep avoiding the topic forever, right?

Was it supposed to be this hard to talk to his own brother? Obviously it was, since Yukio seemed more concerned with learning about this school and being a first class student than escaping and finding ways to go home. Yukio had to go home. Yukio had a future to live for!

...That, and Rin was really fucking tired of living in High School Hell.

As soon as Yukio came out, Rin should have expected the conversation to spiral downhill. Any students leaving class might catch the two of them diving head first into a fierce argument that was clearly getting more and more heated until... Yukio, mid-sentence, pitched forward and fell face first onto the ground.

It got worse when a teacher came out of seemingly nowhere and carried Yukio away before Rin had a chance to say a word against it.

He hardly stops to think about his decision to chase down the teacher.

A note about the hellfire – There’s no guarantee that this ability will be considered as helpful to a god. If the god is able to bear the weight and magnitude of hellfire, then there will be no issue. I’d like to think that the ability to wield it with any semblance of control would be to gain the absolute trust of the shinki. … And to keep said shinki from acting out too often.
