7th Struggle [Action/Video] New Bark Town ... Again

[SUN. BRIGHT, SUNSHINEY SUN. It's so bright, it's almost as bad as getting blinded by snow. But that lasts for only a minute before the gear swings into focus on a face.

A very familiar looking face. Or maybe he wasn't familiar at all and those bright blue eyes, wild black hair, and somewhat sharp teeth were a new and unusual sight.

That person with the familiar looking face had an equally familiar looking Poochyena that had, lovingly, sunk her jaws into his skull. He's dealt with worse before, but he obviously wasn't too happy about his situation.

The Poochyena on the other hand, looked absolutely thrilled to be gnawing on her trainer once more.]

She's been doing this for fifteen minutes... [Fifteen minutes before he was just getting kicked out into New Bark and realizing that he had not dreamt up his time in Johto.]

... How do I make her stop? I can't feel much of my head anymore.

I already know I'm boring, okay? I know that people don't appreciate academics, I don't like hanging out with the ones that do anyway. ...And I already said I'd send it later! Geez.

[Really, his expressions don't help her guesses and their accuracy.]

Why are you freaking out so much? It's a logical conclusion, I mean, you wouldn't expect the god of death to be running a school dedicated to training people with special abilities to protect the world from anomalies, right? Why not a demon running a school that protects people from demons? You said yourself that some demons don't want to hurt people.

[What. No. Totally unpredictable. For instance, Poochy's taken this moment to take a gander at Maka. ...She's not impressed. She yawns in the general direction of the video, almost as if to say "You bored me right off his head. Stop chatting with him. I want him to make me food and your conversation isn't getting me fed."

He's going to have to wear a mask for the rest of his life. Or. He could tell people to keep their secrets to themselves.]

I never said you were boring... [beat] ... all lectures are boring. I suck at academics anyway. [wait a - ] So you want to be my friend because I have bad grades?

[He just doesn't want her to suddenly say OH YEAH I GUESED IN AN INTELLIGENT WAY THAT YOU MUST BE A DEMON TOO and that would be okay?? Just awkward as all hell??]

You make it sound pretty damn logical... But Mephisto doesn't care all that much. He's in it for himself, so he's not a good example. [He probably owns the school so that he could feed his otaku obsession.]

[Weirdly enough, Lord Death is an otaku too.

But that's a subject for another time.]

I didn't say that, it's not like I can magically look into your head at your report cards. I'm just saying that the only other person that competed for grades with me in class was a stuffed shirt until his girlfriend loosened him up. I'm saying people that are into studying and achieving like that? Their personalities are different, less easygoing and friendly.

[She shrugs. Yes, basically she's saying she wants to befriend Rin because he seems friendly.]

But I still guessed right, didn't I? Mephisto...that's an interesting name, I wonder if he's the same as Mephistopheles?

Never mind. He'd have to have a certain fascination with humans anyway if he's taking the trouble of living among them. [But that's all speculation and--] I'm not interested in him, though, this is supposed to be about you.

[Rampaging Onix don't need a special seance, though.]

A reporter disappeared some months ago. His coworkers wished to know if he could still be found alive. It... didn't work as planned.

Oh. Yeah. [She'd be ashamed to see such low grades.

While the whole name sounds odd together, he does find the name to be very familiar.]

Some people do call him Sir Pheles. I don't know what he thinks of humans but he's suspicious. [And other names too but he doesn't really remember beyond being one of the Biggest big shots in Gehenna. That sorta took precedence.

But it must mean nothing, especially since Rin wouldn't be caught dead with 16th century literature MUCH LESS A PLAY about some stupid guy and his stupid wish.

... What the hell should he say about himself? Poochy gets another petting while he tries to think of what else he could possible add. Hmmm... HMMMM -- POOCHY HAS AN IDEA. She snaps at Rin's hand. Any closer and his hand would have had a few new teeth marks on it. Pardon him, Maka, he and Poochy need to talk. ]

Hey - you're going for my hands now? What, are you hungry? [BARK BARK] You're been on your own for a while. When was the last time you ate? [whiiiiiiiiiiine] . . . I'm feeling hungry too.

[He glances towards Maka for a moment. No, he didn't understand everything Poochy said. He's just known her long enough to get the gist.] Would you mind? I can talk and cook. .... [He might lose himself in the cooking and she might get bored just watching soooooo.]

[That's quite a sobering topic.]

Did they ever find their co-worker?

[That sure sounds suspicious all right!!

She perks up when he mentions cooking, however, this looks like a topic she's interested in.]

You cook? Oh, go right ahead! I want to see how you do it! I cook a little bit myself, but I'm no master chef, just enough to take care of myself.

[In this time, Maka's gotten a carry-on herself, a Houndoom poking its head up into the corner of the screen, then snuffing into the camera suspiciously. She doesn't notice until it bumps her elbow with its horn.]

--Ah, I was wondering when you'd show up. I guess it's weird for me to be talking to someone this long, isn't it? [And, as an aside to Rin--] This is Kali, she was my starter the last time I was in Johto.

...A Yamask appeared before the fossils started acting up. That might have been him.

[To that, Rin feels more than a little confused. Yamask was a pokemon, for sure, but it wasn't anything like a dark type that appears when a person dies. Rather than ask, he whips out his pokedex and checks out the entry for Yamask.

It makes him physically ill to read it. To have been that coworker and found that your friend had died - and to have changed so drastically -- Unconsciously he reaches up to Poochy, partially to help her adjust her weight and partially... partially for comfort.]

... Does that mean if we -- [die here] -- we'll become Pokémon too?

[A very sad look crosses his face. Try as he might to avoid the memory, it trickled back to the front of his mind little by little. He didn't want to remember that day. Not now. Not even when he was reminded of it, if only through association.]

[Oh cool, a Houndoom! Poochy does a double take. Hey, if Rin could have long conversations with other humans, why can't she have one with a fellow pokemon!

But it's not like she really wanted to talk to some pokemon with deadly looking horns...

Rin smiles, happy to have an audience to his cooking times. He holds Poochy in one arm and reaches for his bag with the other. Not the best position to be in, especially since his pokegear needs to sit in a different place now that he's moved a bit, but it is accomplished. Rin looks though his bag for food and things like that when -- suddenly there is nothing but the basics that every trainer gets.]

What the hell? First I don't have my pokemon and now I can't have my old shit back?!! [WAIT. NO. OH NO. OH NO. OH NO. Rin drops Poochy and turns his entire bag upside down. Everything falls out in an ungraceful heap, but certainly not the thing he was looking for.]

NO!! [ANGUISH. SO MUCH OVER DRAMATIZED ANGUISH.] She took my badge!!

[At the anguish!! Maka starts and Kali growls, clearly questioning why on Earth her trainer is talking to such a loud human.]

H-hey, come on, there's no need to get upset...

[Come on, Maka, think--think! Think of something comforting to say!]

A-at least...there are only eight badges to get, and getting a type advantage over the gyms is pretty easy. It's not as bad as what happened to me and my partner a while back, our goal was to gather 99 corrupted souls and one witch soul, but...the final soul that we got wasn't a witch and we had to start all over again.

[99, Rin. 99.]

THAT BIRD OTAKU KICKED MY ASS THREE TIMES BEFORE I COULD BEAT HIM.

[Maka. No. You don't understand. He was ridiculed for a month by a child for losing. He couldn't show his face on the 'gear. He lost all his money and had to fight for food and he was a hobo and yeah he might be exaggerating a bit in his mind but it sure feels a lot like that because now the only proof of his one gleaming achievement in Johto ~~besides getting a kick ass job at the Breeding Center~~ was gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooone

Um...I don't know, I wish I could help, but you're all the way back at the beginning and I'm in Olivine. But hey, you can get Shinx around there, right? Maybe if you get one and train it, taking down Falkner will be easier.

[Another whuff comes from Kali. Seriously, Maka, this guy is a freak, why are you still talking to him???? Maka just pats the Houndoom on the head, ignoring (or unaware of) the fact that she's disapproving of her choice in friendships.]

[A knight? Slightly less awesome. Knights are for the other guilds. The closest thing the Gruul have is warriors who hitch a ride on various beasts.]

[There's nothing she can do. NOTHING. She can say stuff though. That was good. Kinda.]

[And where was Poochy? Hiding behind Rin, far out of sight of the other dog-like pokemon. HE'S NOT AS WEIRD AS HE ACTS. comes her definite bark from the safety behind her Rin shield.] Fine, we'll just have to rebuild the old team.

...Hey. Uhm. You can watch me cook another time? [...He sort of means to end the conversation since Maka might have other things she has to get to. Rin has to finally get his butt on the road. But there was no denying that it was good to have someone to talk to. His new list of friends was growing.]

A what? [Mount like horses? Well, there was one guy Rin liked to count on.] My nekomata can make himself huge enough for me to ride on him like a horse.

[That's what Domri meant, right?]

[Sort of, because you can't be a knight without a mount, right? Just that he was picturing a horse or a giant bird or something, not a...]

Right then, I'll see you around Maka. And you too Kali. [And even though he doesn't end the feed right away, there's a moment when a real quiet expression flickers before being tucked away.

People tended to leave Johto. There might not be a "later". Still, it was nice to have enjoyed someone's company.] Later.

An exorcist can tame demons. Well, some can. And they'll do whatever the tamer says. Like... a partnership.

[But Rin's different in that regard since he doesn't need to tame what he can control through rank.]

I guess that makes sense. I can do that kind of thing too with animals. That's what I do back home; I summon the animals I've met and get them to crush anyone who tries to take over Gruul turf. I can make them stronger and faster too!

[ If only she can be offended by anything other than a direct insult to Britain. ]

Something to that nature. It may have well been me--I just simply cannot recall my time spent here since I first arrived. I have yet to fall to a memory coma like many of the others as well, so perhaps I am immune to such things?
